New York: police discipline records can now be made public

Jun 10, 2020 22:58 IST

Spurred by the uproar over the death of George Floyd due ot police brutality, lawmakers of New York state on Tuesday scrapped a decades-old bill that prevented records of disciplinary actions, complaints against the police from being made public. The move came as criminal charges were brought against an NYPD officer over his rough treatment of a protester during demonstrations following the death of Floyd. The repeal makes complaints against officers, as well as transcripts and final dispositions of disciplinary proceedings, public for the first time in decades. On Monday, the state passed other police accountability measures, banning police from using chokeholds, guaranteeing the right to record police activity and making it easier to file lawsuits against people making race-based 911 calls.
