Park Chan-wook's 'No Other Choice' Selected for Oscars

New Delhi, Sep 3 (PTI) Acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook's latest dark comedy, "No Other Choice," has been chosen by the Korean Film Council as South Korea's contender for the Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards.

This film features renowned Korean actors, including "Squid Game" star Lee Byung-hyun, Son Ye-jin from "Crash Landing on You," and "My Name" actor Park Hee-soon in leading roles. "No Other Choice" marks Park Chan-wook's return to directing after his 2022 project, "Decision to Leave." Known internationally for his works such as "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," "Oldboy," and "The Handmaiden," this is Park's second attempt at Oscar glory following "Decision to Leave," which also represented Korea at the Oscars. The selection was announced by the Korean Film Council and made by a jury led by "Parasite" producer Kwak Sin-ae, as reported by Screen Daily.

Kwak praised the film, highlighting its exceptional quality, the impressive performances by the cast, and its high level of completeness. With a globally recognized director and a distributor familiar with the Academy Awards, the film stands out, he said.

"No Other Choice," which debuted at the Venice Film Festival, tells the story of a man adamant about securing a new job after losing his position at a paper company. To increase his chances, he resorts to eliminating other candidates. The film is set to screen next at the Toronto Film Festival and will inaugurate the Busan International Film Festival.

Neon, which distributed Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning "Parasite" in 2020, is representing the film in North America. Mubi has acquired rights to multiple territories outside of North America, including the UK. The film is produced by Park Chan-wook along with Back Jisun of Moho Film, and Michèle Ray Gavras and Alexandre Gavras of France’s KG Productions. Executive producer Miky Lee of CJ Group, backed by CJ ENM, financed the project.
