With Aryan Khan not being named by the Narcotics Control Bureau in the drugs-on-cruise case, the spotlight has shifted to Sameer Wankhade, the controversial officer of the probe agency who first probed the case.   Sameer Wankhede, who was the NCB's former zonal director of Mumbai, had led the raid on the Cordelia cruise ship in October 2021 and arrested Aryan Khan along with 22 others. 
According to India Today, the union home ministry has called for appropriate action against former Narcotics Control Bureau official Sameer Wankhede for his "shoddy investigation" into the cruise drugs bust case.  
This comes after Aryan Khan was cleared by the NCB in the drugs-on-cruise case on Friday after the central agency filed a 6,000-page chargesheet. 
The unnamed sources told India Today that the Centre is already taking action in Sameer Wankhede's fake caste certificate case.   NCP leader Nawab Malik had levelled allegations of caste certificate forgery againstWankhede, claiming that he was born a Muslim but forged his caste certificate to get into the civil services using a seat reserved for the Scheduled Castes. However, Wankhede and his family have stated that the allegations were untrue. 
Amid allegations of corruption against Wankhede, the case was transferred from the Mumbai zone to the central team of the NCB. He was removed from the case and a vigilance probe was initiated against him.

At least seven army soldiers were killed while scores received grievous wounds after a vehicle carrying them skidded into a river in Ladakh. The army in a statement said that a group of 26 soldiers were moving from a transit camp in Partapur when their vehicle skidded in to Shyok river in Leh region which led to injuries to all the occupants. Seven among those in the ill-fated vehicle were declared dead at the field hospital in Partapur and surgical teams from have been rushed to the hospital. The statement noted that there are grievous injuries to others as well and efforts are on to air lift them to a shift them to the Western Command hospital.

According to media reports, 2,965 currency notes of Rs 100 denomination, 1,911 notes of Rs 200 denomination and 2,573 notes of Rs 500 denominations amounting to Rs 19.65 lakh were in the ATM which was destroyed as thieves tried to open it with a gas cutter. 
The police have registered a case for burglary and punishment for attempting to commit offences against the perpetrators.
A complaint registered by the private company responsible for the maintenance of the ATM kiosk said the incident took place between May 14-15. There was almost a week's delay between the theft and filing of the complaint, according to reports.

A day after Rajasthan sports minister asked to be relieved from his post over the conduct of the CM's principal secretary, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said Ashok Chandna's tweet should not be taken seriously as he might be under pressure due to the workload.
Chandna on Thursday expressed anguish over the conduct of Gehlot's principal secretary, referring to him as the "minister of all the departments", and said he would prefer being removed as a minister.
Chandna made his displeasure public through a tweet, saying he does not want to hold on to the "dishonourable" ministerial post.
Gehlot said Chandna had organised a state level sports programme earlier and in the same way, a similar event -- 'Rural Olympics' is going to be held for the first time in Rajasthan in which 30 lakh people are likely to participate.
"A huge load is on him. Maybe he (Chandna) came under tension and made some comments. It should not be taken seriously... will talk to him," Gehlot told reporters.
The chief minister said he had not talked to the minister till now.
"He seem to be working under pressure, such a big responsibility has come on him, will see," Gehlot said.
In his tweet, Chandna had said, "I request the honourable chief minister to relieve me of this dishonourable ministerial post and give the charge of all my departments to Shri Kuldeep Ranka ji. He is anyway the minister of all the departments," he tweeted in Hindi, without elaborating.  Ranka is the principal secretary to the chief minister.
The development comes just days ahead of Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan and indicates resentment within the party. Just a week ago, Congress MLA from Dungarpur Ganesh Ghogra sent his resignation to Gehlot in protest against a police case against him.

Residents of a town in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district held a traditional funeral of a monkey that died due to electrocution.
A funeral procession was taken out before the animal's last rites in Teother town on Monday.
A video surfaced on social media, in which some people along with a music band were seen taking out a procession. A man was seen holding the carcass with garlands and wrapped in a cloth with the name of Lord Ram inscribed on it.
Mahendra Kesharwani, a local trader, said when he reached his shop on Monday, he found the monkey dead near an electric pole.
“When contacted, local civic officials said it is the work of the forest department to cremate the animals. On the other hand, the forest department said it is the civic body's responsibility," he told reporters.
After forest officials were repeatedly contacted, they suggested that the citizens could perform the last rites of the ape, he said.
“We traders then decided to perform the monkey's last rites in a traditional way,” he said.
Later, some village residents buried the carcass with full respect as per the traditions, he added.

The anti-drugs agency has filed a 6,000-page chargesheet, naming 14 accused, after drugs were found on a cruise ship off Mumbai last year. But Aryan, who spent three weeks in jail and five others, don't feature in the chargesheet as NCB in a statement said no proof was found against them. 
The agency which has faced flak for its handling of the case said that the principle of proof beyond reasonable doubt has been applied. The NCB had claimed that Aryan Khan was a regular user and supplier of drugs, charges strongly denied by him and his lawyers who contended that no drugs were found on him during the raid.
Sameer Wankhede, the officer in charge of the investigation, was changed amid allegations of deliberately targeting Aryan Khan and even trying to blackmail the accused.

Author Geetanjali Shree's Hindi novel ‘Tomb of Sand’ has become the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize.

Author Geetanjali Shree's Hindi novel &lsquo;Tomb of Sand&rsquo; has become the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize.
At a ceremony in London on Thursday, the New Delhi-based writer said she was &ldquo;completely overwhelmed&rdquo; with the "bolt from the blue" as she accepted her prize, worth GBP 50,000 and shared with the book's English translator, Daisy Rockwell.
&lsquo;Tomb of Sand&rsquo;, originally &lsquo;Ret Samadhi&rsquo;, is set in northern India and follows an 80-year-old woman in a tale the Booker judges dubbed a &ldquo;joyous cacophony&rdquo; and an "irresistible novel".
&ldquo;I never dreamt of the Booker, I never thought I could. What a huge recognition, I&rsquo;m amazed, delighted, honoured and humbled,&rdquo; said Shree, in her acceptance speech.
&ldquo;There is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to it. &lsquo;Ret Samadhi/Tomb of Sand&rsquo; is an elegy for the world we inhabit, a lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom. The Booker will surely take it to many more people than it would have reached otherwise, that should do the book no harm,&rdquo; she said.
Reflecting upon becoming the first work of fiction in Hindi to make the Booker cut, the 64-year-old author said it feels good to be the means of that happening.
&ldquo;But behind me and this book lies a rich and flourishing literary tradition in Hindi, and in other South Asian languages. World literature will be the richer for knowing some of the finest writers in these languages. The vocabulary of life will increase from such an interaction,&rdquo; she said.
Rockwell, a painter, writer and translator living in Vermont, US, joined her on stage to receive her award for translating the novel she described as a &ldquo;love letter to the Hindi language".
&ldquo;Ultimately, we were captivated by the power, the poignancy and the playfulness of &lsquo;Tomb of Sand&rsquo;, <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/geetanjali-shree-wins-international-booker-prize-for-first-hindi-novel-tomb-of-sand-1653623944372" target="_blank">Geetanjali </a><a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/geetanjali-shree-wins-international-booker-prize-for-first-hindi-novel-tomb-of-sand-1653623944372" target="_blank">Shree</a>&rsquo;s polyphonic novel of identity and belonging, in Daisy Rockwell's exuberant, coruscating translation,&rdquo; said Frank Wynne, chair of the judging panel.
&ldquo;This is a luminous novel of India and partition, but one whose spellbinding brio and fierce compassion weaves youth and age, male and female, family and nation into a kaleidoscopic whole,&rdquo; he said.
The book&rsquo;s 80-year-old protagonist, Ma, to her family&rsquo;s consternation, insists on travelling to Pakistan, simultaneously confronting the unresolved trauma of her teenage experiences of Partition, and re-evaluating what it means to be a mother, a daughter, a woman, a feminist.
The Booker jury were impressed that rather than respond to tragedy with seriousness, Shree's playful tone and exuberant wordplay results in a book that is &ldquo;engaging, funny, and utterly original&rdquo;, at the same time as being an urgent and timely protest against the destructive impact of borders and boundaries, whether between religions, countries, or genders.
The author of three novels and several story collections, Mainpuri-born Shree has translated her works into English, French, German, Serbian, and Korean.
Originally published in Hindi in 2018, &lsquo;Tomb of Sand&rsquo; is the first of her books to be published in the UK in English by Tilted Axis Press in August 2021.

Shree's novel was chosen from a shortlist of six books, the others being: &lsquo;Cursed Bunny&rsquo; by Bora Chung, translated by Anton Hur from Korean; &lsquo;A New Name: Septology VI-VII&rsquo; by Jon Fosse, translated by Damion Searls from Norwegian; &lsquo;Heaven&rsquo; by Mieko Kawakami, translated by Samuel Bett and David Boyd from Japanese; &lsquo;Elena Knows&rsquo; by Claudia Pi&ntilde;eiro, translated by Frances Riddle from Spanish; and &lsquo;The Books of Jacob&rsquo; by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Jennifer Croft from Polish.
This year the judges considered 135 books and for the first time in 2022, all shortlisted authors and translators will each receive GBP 2,500, increased from GBP 1,000 in previous years &ndash; bringing the total value of the prize to GBP 80,000.
Complementing the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/scottish-author-wins-booker-prize-for-debut-novel-1605840657488" target="_blank">Booker Prize</a> for Fiction, the international prize is awarded every year for a single book that is translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.

Four Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed in two separate encounters in Kashmir in a span of 10 hours by security forces.
Of the four, two killed in an overnight operation in Awantipora were involved in the murder of artist Amreen Bhat. A police spokesman said that an encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Awantipora area of Pulwama district.
In a predawn operation, two LeT militants were killed in Soura, where a cop had been shot dead and his daughter injured just a few days earlier.
Inspector General of Police (Kashmir zone) Vijay Kumar confirmed the encounters.
Amreen Bhat, who worked as a TV artiste besides being an emerging social media starlet, was shot dead and her 10-year-old nephew injured by ultras inside her house at Chadoora in Budgam district on Wednesday.

Of the four, two killed in an overnight operation in Awantipora were involved in the murder of artist Amreen&nbsp;Bhat. A police spokesman said that an encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Awantipora area of Pulwama district.

In a predawn operation, two&nbsp;LeT&nbsp;militants were killed in&nbsp;Soura, where a cop had been shot dead and his daughter injured just a few days earlier.
Inspector General of Police (Kashmir zone) Vijay Kumar confirmed the encounters.
Amreen Bhat, who worked as a TV artiste besides being an emerging social media starlet, was shot dead and her 10-year-old nephew injured by ultras inside her house at Chadoora in Budgam district on Wednesday.

India's daily Covid case count continued its downward slide on January 30.
As per data released by the Union government, the country recorded over 2 lakh, 34 thousand new infections in a span of 24 hours. A day earlier, this figure stood at 2.35 lakh.
However, the daily positivity rate rose from 13.39% on January 29 to 14.50% on January 30. Positivity rate is the share of positive results out of the total tests conducted.
Meanwhile, 3.52 lakh patients recovered in a day taking the recovery rate to 94.21%. The total number of recovered patients now stands at 3.87 crore.
The active caseload of the country is 18.84 lakh.
On a grim note, the country recorded 893 deaths in 24 hours, taking the total Covid death toll to 4,94,091. A day earlier, the death toll was 871.
Meanwhile, the total vaccination figure reached 165.7 crore.

K-pop has become quite popular among the Indian youth these days. The famous South Korean band, 'BTS' has taken over the internet by storm.
Recently, an 18-year-old girl from Odisha, Sriya Lenka has become India's first K-pop idol. She has been selected as one of the members of the Korean pop band 'Blackswan' along with Brazil's Gabriela Dalcin.
The official Instagram handle of 'Blackswan's label DR Music shared the news on their handle and wrote, "Sriya and Gabi were finally selected as members of Blackswan after participating the global audition program for last 6 months,".
Ms. Lenka and Ms. Dalcin will be in Seoul for the next five months. They went through intense training for the last six months.
The girl band which debuted in 2020 has now six members in total including, Youngheun, Fatou, Judy, Leia, Sriya, and Gabi.
According to India Today, Sriya is a trained musical dancer and has been performing since 12.

A woman was brutally stabbed in broad daylight in Hyderabad as passers-by look on.
The CCTV footage released shows a woman crossing the street when a man attacks her from behind on a busy road. No one is seen trying to intervene. Alarmed witnesses walk away quickly as the situation escalated. 
The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Syed Noor Bano. The police are on the lookout for her attacker, who they say is her neighbour.

This is the state of BJP government in the state." Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhakar Chaudhary said, "The banner was put up by some unidentified people in the afternoon. Police has identified some people for their alleged involvement in the matter and action will be taken against them." The officer added that minutes before the banner was put up, two groups reached the police station over some old property dispute. Police suspect that someone from either sides might have put up the banner.

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Friday questioned the "stony silence" of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for not congratulating students for excelling in the national achievement survey conducted by the Centre.             According to a report of the NAS-2021, Punjab has emerged as the top performer among states.
It has got first rank in all subjects of Classes 3, 5, 8 and first position in mathematics subject of Class 10.
The NAS was conducted on November 12, 2021 by the Centre. The NAS is a national-level assessment survey which is conducted to obtain information about learning achievement of students.              
Warring on Friday slammed CM Mann for not congratulating the students and teachers of Punjab on getting top rank in the NAS.
"I am surprised over the stony silence of our Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann as it is a matter of pride and glory for all the Punjabis," Warring said in a statement.  
"Or the government has turned stone deaf and cannot hear and bear anything other than the Delhi Model, which fell way behind the Punjab model," said Warring.            
The Punjab Congress chief said the "silence" of the chief minister and his party is obvious as they cannot afford to acknowledge the achievements of the Congress government.
"They must be shocked as to how they can sell a model that they claim is so successful when it fell way behind the Punjab model that they seek to improve," he said while taking a swipe at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's oft-repeated claims about Delhi model of education.             Warring urged the chief minister that as a proud Punjabi, he should not have any hesitations in glorifying the Punjab model wherever he goes, whether to Gujarat or Himachal Pradesh.
"Instead of parroting Kejriwal's failed Delhi model, as was revealed in the recent NAS, you should proudly propagate the successful Punjab Model," Warring advised Mann.             "We do not want or expect you to acknowledge the achievement of the Congress government in improving the education system in the state, but at least have the moral courage to acknowledge the achievements of your own Punjabi teachers and students who have outshone everyone in the country, including those who study in Delhi," Warring told Mann.
