In the document published by the health ministry, the government said that face masks are not recommended for children aged 5 years and below. The guidelines said that children aged 6 to 11 may wear a mask contingent on their ability to use it safely and appropriately under supervision. Children aged 12 and above should wear masks like adults are expected to do. The document also contained guidelines regarding a host of treatments and how they are to be used for minors. Use of antivirals or monoclonal antibodies has been advised against for Covid patients aged less than 18 years. The government said that severity of disease doesn't matter in this regard. If steroids are used on minors, their use should be tapered over 10-14 days. The document also had directions regarding response to respiratory distress, multisystem inflammatory syndrome, and use of anti-coagulants. Meanwhile, the government revealed that over 3 crore, 94 lakh Covid vaccines have been administered in the 15-18 age group till January 20.

In a video from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, a man can be seen climbing a tree after health workers visited his area for Covid vaccination. The man was later convinced by the authorities on the benfits of the vaccine and was administered the jab.
While things ended on a hilarious note in Ballia, in Bihar a man's fear of vaccine took a turn violent as he assaulted the health workers.
A boatman pounced on the officials who were on a vaccination drive in Reoti area of Bihar. In the viral video, a man standing on a boat can be seen furiously arguing against taking the vaccine with the officials, before assaulting one of them. Here too, officials said that the man was in the end convinced and given the shot.
Experts have repeatedly emphasised that vaccines are the best bet against coronavirus and are safe. Government has also been urging people to take the Covid shots. Don't be like these two men, go get your vaccine.

According to India’s health ministry data on January 5, the variant has been found in 139 countries with over 4.8 lakh cases.
What are symptoms of the Omicron variant?
According to doctors, the variant in most cases causes asymptomatic or mild infections. The WHO has said that so far there is no data to suggest that Omicron leads to symptoms that are different from the previous variants. Most common symptoms of the Omicron variant according to doctors are fatigue, scratchy throat, headache, body ache and fever.
Doctors also suggest that symptoms like loss of smell and tase, breathlessness or drop in oxygen levels have not yet been associated with Omicron.  
Studies suggest that the reason behind the variant presenting mild symptoms and not affecting breathing or oxygen levels is that it does not affect the lung tissue. Comparted to Delta, Omicron mostly affects the upper respiratory tract like nose, mouth and throat and not the lung tissue.
The variant is causing a spike in Covid-19 cases across the globe but available data shows that it is not leading to rise in hospitalization as compared to the earlier waves.
However, WHO has warned that dismissing the variant as mild could be dangerous.
Are vaccines effective against Omicron?
Most doctors and experts are of the opinion that there is not enough data to reach a conclusion on whether or not the new variant reduces the efficacy of the existing vaccines.

According to India&rsquo;s health ministry data on January 5, the variant has been found in 139 countries with over 4.8 lakh cases.
<h3>What are symptoms of the Omicron variant?</h3>
According to doctors, the variant in most cases causes asymptomatic or mild infections. The WHO has said that so far there is no data to suggest that Omicron leads to symptoms that are different from the previous variants. Most common symptoms of the Omicron variant according to doctors are fatigue, scratchy throat, headache, body ache and fever.
Doctors also suggest that symptoms like loss of smell and tase, breathlessness or drop in oxygen levels have not yet been associated with Omicron. &nbsp;
Studies suggest that the reason behind the variant presenting mild symptoms and not affecting breathing or oxygen levels is that it does not affect the lung tissue. Comparted to Delta, Omicron mostly affects the upper respiratory tract like nose, mouth and throat and not the lung tissue.

According to the Union Health Ministry data, in the 24 hours till 8am on Thursday, India saw 2,86,384 new Covid-19 cases and 573 related deaths.
The data showed that 3,06,357 patients had recovered during the period.But the daily positivity rate - which is the share of coronavirus tests that return positive and considered a key marker of the pandemic's status - is up from 16.10% to 19.59% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 17.75 per cent.The active cases now comprise 5.46 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.33 per cent.

Stressing the need to continue with precautions to curb the surge in infections, it noted that Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan were recording a high number of Covid cases and positivity.
Simultaneously, a decline in Covid cases and positivity rate have been observed in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Odisha, Haryana and West Bengal, the government stated.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO's director-general said that conditions remain ideal for more coronavirus variants to emerge but also added a positive note by saying that  the acute phase of the pandemic could still end this year — if some key targets are met.
He said Covid can cease to be global health emergency by this year if WHO's target to vaccinate 70 per cent of the population of each country by the middle of this year is achieved.
The WHO chief added that the focus must be on people who are at the highest risk of Covid-19, and improving testing and sequencing rates to track the virus and its emerging variants more closely.

India's drug regulator has granted regular market approval for Covid-19 vaccines Covishield and Covaxin for use in the adult population subject to certain conditions, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday.
The two vaccines so far had restricted emergency use authorisation. 
"The regulator has upgraded the permission for Covaxin and Covishield from restricted use in emergency situations to normal new drug permission in the adult population with certain conditions," Mandaviya said.
According to news agency PTI, Covaxin and Covishield will soon be available at hospitals and clinics for people to buy. 
Gradually, the vaccine will be available in the market at a price lower than at what it was being sold earlier at private hospitals, the report added. 
The health minister also clarified that govt's free vaccination drive will continue even after the vaccines are made available in the regular market.
