Meta algo leading to addiction, ruining lives ? 8 lawsuits hit social giant

Eight complaints filed in courthouses across the US over the last week: reports

It is not the first time that the social giant Meta is being accused of intentionally driving addiction via its algorithms but this time the Mark Zuckerberg-backed firm is facing a barrage of lawsuits.

As per a report on Bloomberg; eight complaints were filed in courthouses across the US claiming the company built algorithms in its platforms that lure young people into a destructive addiction. The complaints in the lawsuit allege that excessive exposure to platforms including Facebook and Instagram has led to attempted or actual suicides, eating disorders, and sleeplessness among young users.

Meta (then called Facebook) faced severe backlash in September 2021 when WSJ published a series of reports based on internal Facebook documents titled 'Facebook Files' which highlighted that the company knew Instagram was 'toxic' for teenage girls.
