Mount Etna has erupted in Italy's Sicily with 100 metre-high lava fountains. According to the reports, the intensity of the explosion increased from moderate to high. A loud explosion was heard in the Calabria region as the smoke from the eruption of Etna was seen moving towards one of Italy's largest city Catania. Authorities reported no danger to the towns that dot the mountain's slopes. Etna erupts frequently due to its position between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, as well as the fracture between the African and Ionian microplates.
