Big blow to Nepal PM K P Oli, Nepal's Supreme Court reinstates dissolved parliament

Feb 24, 2021 11:26 IST

In a landmark ruling, Nepal's Supreme Court has reinstated the dissolved parliament, and ordered the government to summon a House session within the next 13 days.

A Constitutional bench of Nepal's top court observed that the decision to dissolve the House was 'unconstitutional', as there still was a possibility of forming a new government.

The top court's move comes two months after Prime Minister K P Oli dissolved the House and called for an early election amid a tussle for power with his rivals in the ruling communist party.

The ruling means Oli, who was elected in 2018 following his party’s landslide win in the 2017 elections, now faces a no-confidence vote once parliament resumes session.
