It was shameful behaviour on the part of the people of Guwahati. It was just yesterday, February 1 that Assam Finance and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had inaugurated two foot over bridges in Guwahati and within hours the escalator bars have been painted red with betel nut and gutkha spit. The bridges have been at a cost of over Rs 10 crore for the convenience of the people of the city. But instead of appreciating the infrastructure development and making good use of the facilities, few people decided to spit and soil the facilities. The foot-over bridges are fitted with automated elevators, escalators and ramp, making these bridges disabled friendly. Reacting to the matter, Commissioner of Police, Munna Prasad Gupta said that acts of defacing or spitting on public property is a punishable offence and violates provisions under the Municipal Act. Anyone caught red handed would be punished as per provisions of the law.
