February 2 is marked as World Wetlands Day each year. It celebrates the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran.
The theme for this year is 'Wetlands and Water' and it seeks to spread awareness on the importance of preserving and restoring our wetlands.
As per a UNESCO report, we are using up more freshwater than what nature can replenish. According to Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India has 42 sites that have been designated as Wetlands of International Importance.
