World Tsunami Awareness Day is commemorated on the 5th of November each year. The day seeks to encourage stakeholders to develop strategies of risk reduction to save lives against the calamity. The day is observed by the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction and the theme for 2020 is focused on the Sendai Seven Campaign. Almost 58 tsunami events in the past 100 years have caused more than 260,000 fatalities, with the largest number of casualties reported in December 2004 in the Indian Ocean. In a bid to save lives, awareness, early warning systems, resilient infrastructure and protection of coastal eco-systems may help.
