World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31 every year to highlight the risk associated with the use of tobacco. The annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness about the harmful effects that tobacco can have on people.
According to WHO, roughly 6 million people die from tobacco-related ailments every year and that number is projected to rise to over 8 million by 2030. This day is celebrated with a different theme each year, the theme for 2021 is 'Commit to Quit.'
World No Tobacco Day was initiated by the World Health Organisation in 1988 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and prevent the death and disease it causes. The day also encourages governments to set policies into action that help to reduce smoking and the use of other tobacco products.
