Kyiv, Aug 26 (PTI) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending warm wishes on Ukraine's Independence Day. Zelenskyy emphasized Kyiv's reliance on India's role in bringing an end to the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a post on social media, Zelenskyy acknowledged India's commitment to "peace and dialogue." He remarked that as the world collectively strives to conclude this devastating war with honor and secure enduring peace, India’s involvement is crucial.

"Every decision that bolsters diplomacy enhances security not only in Europe but also across the Indo-Pacific and beyond," Zelenskyy stated.

On August 16, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his hopes for a future defined by peace and progress for the people of Ukraine, reciprocating Zelenskyy's Independence Day wishes to India on August 15. Zelenskyy had expressed his anticipation that New Delhi would aid efforts to conclude the conflict with Russia.

Modi expressed gratitude on X, saying, "Thank you, President Zelenskyy, for your warm greetings. We deeply value the joint commitment to fostering closer ties between India and Ukraine. We sincerely wish our friends in Ukraine a future filled with peace, progress, and prosperity."

Zelenskyy also shared a letter from Prime Minister Modi dated August 24, where Modi thanked the Ukrainian president for his thoughtful message and kind wishes on India's Independence Day.

Reflecting on his visit to Kyiv last August, Modi expressed his eagerness to enhance the mutually beneficial cooperation between India and Ukraine. "I also take this opportunity to extend my greetings to you and the people of Ukraine on your Independence Day. I fondly recall my visit to Kyiv last year and appreciate the progress in India-Ukraine bilateral relations since. I look forward to collaborating with you to further strengthen our mutually beneficial cooperation," Modi wrote.

Modi reiterated India’s unwavering stance for peace, pledging all possible support for sincere efforts aimed at achieving an early, lasting, and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Zelenskyy's remarks come as an August 27 deadline looms for the 50 percent "punitive tariffs" imposed by former US President Donald Trump on India for purchasing Russian crude oil.
