Lahore, August 14 (PTI) – In a tragic incident highlighting the persistent issue of so-called "honour" killings in Pakistan's Punjab province, a 24-year-old woman doctor, who had recently returned with a foreign qualification, was allegedly murdered by her younger brother. The police confirmed this on Thursday.

The incident unfolded last week in Toba Tek Singh, about 200 kilometers from Lahore. The victim, Dr. Ayesha Bibi, had completed her MBBS degree in Kyrgyzstan before returning to Pakistan.

Initially, the victim's father reported to the police that an argument over meal preparation had escalated, resulting in her being shot by her younger brother, Umair. However, further police interrogation revealed a different motive.

During the initial investigation, Umair confessed to the murder, stating that the motive was "honour." He admitted to killing his sister because she intended to marry a doctor of her own choice – another Kyrgyzstan MBBS graduate – which the family opposed.

The police revealed that Ayesha's family was against her decision and had warned her to avoid any contact with the suitor. Last week, tensions reached a tragic climax when Umair reportedly tortured and subsequently shot Ayesha.

This heartbreaking case is a grim reminder of the statistics reported by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, which estimates that approximately 1,000 women are killed annually by relatives who believe that these women have brought dishonour to their families.
