US President Joe Biden on Monday made a surprise visit to war-torn Kyiv just ahead of the first anniversary of the Ukraine-Russia conflict that broke out on Feb 24, 2022.
First visuals from Ukraine's capital show Biden landing in the capital city amid a blaring air raid siren. The US president was seen walking alongside Ukrainian President Zelensky.
Biden delivered remarks as he met with Zelensky at Mariinsky Palace to announce an additional half billion dollars in US assistance and to reassure Ukraine of American and allied support as the conflict continues.
“One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands,” Biden said.
Biden's visit to Kyiv is being seen as a massive show of support as global leaders have registered strong objections to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
