The US Department of Defense revealed the reason behind the spike in UFO sightings after the 1950s, clarifying that the US has ‘no evidence’ of extraterrestrial life.

A new Pentagon report stated that the sightings were caused by tests of advanced US spy planes and space technology. The department listed high-altitude balloons, U2 spy planes and other reconnaissance vessels.

“The proliferation of television programmes, books, movies, and the vast amount of internet and social media content centered on UAP-related topics most likely has influenced the public conversation on this topic, and reinforced these beliefs within some sections of the population,” the Pentagon report read, as per BBC. The report has also been submitted to the US Congress.

The report also addressed common beliefs that have been influenced by popular culture. The Researchers behind the report took the narrative into account and said many people believe the US has encountered alien life and intends to keep it a secret.

“All investigative efforts, at all levels of classification, concluded that most sightings were ordinary objects and phenomena and the result of misidentification,” Major General Pat Ryder said, as per BBC.
