A US man's body was found inside a closet in his house months after he went missing.

Illinois' 53-year-old Richard Maedge disappeared in April last year after informing his wife that he was leaving from work, The Independent reported. However, when his wife Jennifer Maedge returned home she couldn't find Richard though his car was parked outside their house.

No evidence of Richard was traced until December last year when Jennifer found his remains in a storage area under a staircase at home.

She told US media that her husband died by suicide with police also ruling out foul play after the autopsy.

Madison County Coroner said the body went unnoticed for months as the odour may not have been strong enough, with the body appearing beyond decomposition and in a mummified state.

Jennifer sensed a sewer-like smell inside the residence in December when the body was discovered, police added.
