Tokyo, Oct 9 (AP) Heavy rain from a typhoon pummeled a chain of Japanese islands south of Tokyo on Thursday, prompting government warnings for residents to remain vigilant against potential landslides and flooding.

According to Kyodo news agency, record rainfall has been observed in areas of the Izu island chain, situated 280 km south of the Japanese capital.

Due to the severe weather, hundreds sought safety in evacuation centers. Tragically, a man lost his life after being swept away by waves while fishing in Oiso, Kanagawa prefecture, on the main island of Honshu.
