The death toll caused by the earthquake in Turkey and neighbouring countries spiked considerably as the scale of the devastation became clearer.
Hours after news broke on 6 February 2023 of a 7.8-magnitude temblor causing the collapse of multiple buildings, authorities said that more than 90 people had died. Over 50 people were killed in Turkey, while more than 40 died in neighbouring Syria.
The toll is expected to climb higher.
The quake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, had its epicentre around 33 km from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital, according to the US Geological Survey. The 7.8 quake was followed by a 6.7-magnitude temblor around 10 minutes later.
