Sydney, Sep 1 (AP) An individual has been charged following an incident where an SUV collided with the gates of the Russian consulate in Sydney on Monday, according to police reports.
Authorities were alerted around 8 am to the location in the eastern suburb of Woollahra. A vehicle was found parked without authorization in the driveway of the consulate.
Efforts were made by officers to engage the driver in conversation, but instead, the driver accelerated the Toyota Kluger into the gates, as stated in a police report.
Two police personnel incurred minor injuries during the encounter and received medical attention from paramedics. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed, the police confirmed.
The SUV ultimately came to a halt on the consulate's lawn in close proximity to a flagpole. The vehicle was later removed from the scene approximately two hours afterward.
A 39-year-old suspect was detained on-site and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. He faces several charges, including property damage, possession of a knife, and possession of an unspecified restricted substance. Authorities have not disclosed any information regarding the suspect's motives.
The Russian Embassy, situated in the Australian capital of Canberra, issued a statement confirming that no injuries were sustained by consulate personnel and ongoing activities continued without disruption. (AP)
