A South Korean navy patrol plane, with four people on board, crashed near a military base in the southern city of Pohang, according to reports. Eyewitnesses reported spotting a large plume of smoke rising from the mountains at the crash site.

The South Korean navy has confirmed that it was a P-3 aircraft that crashed on Thursday afternoon. The crash took place at 1:50 pm local time, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Emergency workers are currently battling a fire at the crash site, suspected to have been caused by the impact of the plane hitting the ground. The navy is yet to determine the cause of the accident and confirm the number of casualties.

This accident comes months after a Jeju Air passenger plane crashed in South Korea, killing all 175 passengers on board and four of six crew members.

The Jeju Air 089590.KS jet belly-landed at Muan International Airport and crashed into an embankment, going up in flames. It was one of the worst aviation disasters in the country's history.
