Singapore, July 30 (PTI) - In a heartwarming act of gratitude, a Singapore charity has collected over SGD 70,000 through community efforts to reward seven Indian workers who heroically saved a driver after her car plunged into a sinkhole.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Tanjong Katong Road South, when the workers, led by foreman Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, bravely rescued the driver from the precarious situation.
The charity, ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), proudly announced on Wednesday via social media that the fundraising goal of SGD 70,000 had been achieved. "Target Raised and REACHED! Thank you Singapore for your overwhelming kindness and generosity to the brave sinkhole rescue migrant worker heroes!" the charity expressed.
This 10-year-old organization, dedicated to supporting foreign workers, established a platform to honor their courageous act, IRR founder Dipa Swaminathan shared with PTI on Wednesday. "Funds raised will help recognize their contribution in a meaningful, tangible way. Because bravery deserves to be honoured. Because these men are not just workers -- they are the backbone of our nation. Because if we can't give them medals, we can still give them dignity," the campaign post asserted.
Swaminathan also mentioned that a formal ceremony will be organized to present the funds to the seven workers.
Videos of the daring rescue have gone viral, capturing widespread admiration from Singaporeans. The rescue proved to be timely, as reports indicated the sinkhole later filled with water from a burst pipe.
Additionally, during a visit to the workers' dormitory on July 27, Minister for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash gifted each worker a commemorative coin from the Ministry of Manpower's Assurance, Care, and Engagement (ACE) Group.
