Salvagers abandoned an effort to tow away a burning oil tanker in the Red Sea as ‘it was not safe to proceed’. The European Union naval mission made the announcement, after the ship was set ablaze on August 21. Yemen’s Houthis attacked the Greek-flagged tanker with small arms
fire, projectiles and a drone boat. The ship named Sounion is now stranded in the sea, threatening to spill 1 million barrels of oil in the Red Sea. While a major spill has yet to occur, the incident threatens to become one of the worst yet in Houthi attacks.
