Moscow, Sep 19 (PTI) Russia has proposed a new level of cooperation with India in the localization of both large and small nuclear power plants, enhancing their civil nuclear energy partnership. This announcement was made Friday in Vienna during the 69th annual session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference.

Currently, Russia is engaged in the construction of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu. Alexey Likhachov, Director General of Rosatom, the state atomic energy corporation, presented this offer to the Indian delegation. These discussions took place on the conference's sidelines between September 15-20.

"Given India is one of Rosatom’s strategic partners, our discussions focused on expanding our work in peaceful nuclear energy." Rosatom expressed a desire to collaborate with India on localizing projects involving large and small nuclear power plants, reflecting India’s robust industrial capability.

"Both parties evaluated the progress made on the four units being constructed as part of phases II and III of the Kudankulam NPP." They also explored possibilities for continued cooperation, including serial construction of Russian-designed nuclear power plants throughout India.

Rosatom has already commissioned two units as part of the first phase of the Kudankulam NPP. During the IAEA conference, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of Russia's nuclear industry, Rosatom highlighted its accomplishments, innovative projects, and a strategic outlook for the nuclear energy future worldwide.

Previously, Rosatom signed an agreement with India sourcing equipment for the Rooppur NPP project in Bangladesh.
