The Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally asked visiting minister for Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju to withdraw India's military from the island nation when the two met on October 18.

Rijiju represented India at the inauguration of the Maldives' new President which was a significant downgrade from the previous occasions where the prime minister was present.

A press release issued from the Maldives President's office said Rijiju was told to remove the Indian military presence at the President's Office.

The Indian side said both countries will try to find a "workable solution".
