Pablo Picasso, one of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, has once again left the world in awe. His exquisite artwork, 'Woman with a Watch,' recently fetched a staggering $139 million at an auction by Sotheby's in New York. This took place on Wednesday night.
For those unaware, 'Woman with a Watch' is a fascinating painting that Picasso created in 1932 during his abstract period.
This painting features one of Picasso’s companions and muses, the French painter Marie-Therese Walter. Earlier, Sotheby estimated that the price of this painting would go up to $120 million.
In 1927, Marie-Therese Walter met Picasso when he was still married to Olga Khokhlova, a Russian-Ukrainian ballet dancer. At that time, Marie-Therese was only 17 years old.
Marie-Therese also appeared in another Picasso painting called "Femme assise pres d'une fenetre (Marie-Therese)," which was sold in 2021 for a whopping $103.4 million by Christie's auction house.
In the same year, Sotheby's also sold another Picasso painting that included Marie-Therese for $103 million. Picasso and Marie-Therese had a daughter together, who unfortunately passed away last year.
Even 50 years after Picasso's death in 1973 at the age of 91, he continues to be one of the most important artists of the modern world. He is often praised as a highly creative and influential genius.
