In a possible breakthrough in the search for the missing Titanic tourist submersible, rescuers have reportedly detected loud "banging" noises.

The sounds are repeating at an interval of 30 minutes, according to an internal US government memo cited by news outlets. The noise was detected using sonar.

With the vessel estimated to have just around 30 hours of oxygen left, a group involved in the rescue operations said that data from the search site showed likely signs of life.
