Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed on January 7 condemned the derogatory remark made by a minister against India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mariyam Shiuna, Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, had called Modi a clown and a puppet of Israel.

Reacting to it, Nasheed said the language used by the government official towards the leader of a key ally is appalling. He added that the Maldives government must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect government policy.

Another minister, Zahid Rameez, India's idea of competing with the Maldives in tourism is delusional.

Several Indian celebrities, including actor Akshay Kumar have reacted to the controversy, calling out the statements of the Maldives' officials.

Meanwhile, celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar and John Abraham shared social media posts to promote Indian islands, particularly the Lakshadweep, where the PM visited days ago.
