Days after Japan started releasing nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima plant into the Pacific Ocean, stones were reportedly thrown at the Japanese embassy in China. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pulled up the Chinese ambassador after the incident.
Kishida said there were “numerous harassment calls,” that possibly originated from China, adding that the actions were “regrettable.”
While Japan has boosted security around Chinese diplomatic areas, many citizens living in China were asked to maintain a low profile.
The aggressive acts have been reported since Japan started releasing previously toxic water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. UN’s nuclear agency has said the discharge was now safe.
China opposed the wastewater release, saying it was a nuclear hazard with possible cross-border implications.

Japan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Masataka Okano said that a “number of similar incidents are also happening in China against Japan-related facilities,” news agency AFP reported.
