Iran is urging the UN Security Council to live up to its responsibilities in ensuring global peace and order.

The country's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi on Wednesday also called on Council members to exert pressure on Israel to halt its military action in Lebanon and Gaza.

"Immediate action must be taken to halt Israel's war machine and prevent further regional escalation," the Iranian diplomat said.
