Singapore, July 16 (PTI) – A 22-year-old Indian student has been sentenced to 35 months in prison for causing the death of another Indian national by pushing him into the river while under the influence of alcohol. On Wednesday, Legha Pawan admitted to voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Jasbir Singh, a 33-year-old construction worker, on the evening of June 30 last year. The original charge, which was causing death by a rash act, was reduced, and an additional charge was considered, according to a report from Channel News Asia.

Jasbir Singh, who was married with two young children in India, was the sole breadwinner for his family. The court was informed that both individuals were intoxicated on the night the incident occurred. After Singh was pushed into the river at Clarke Quay— a bustling riverside tourist hotspot— a nearby couple raised an alarm. Rescue divers discovered his body a few hours later.

Legha fled the scene and attempted to evade arrest but was captured the following morning, the report stated. Deputy Public Prosecutor Jheong Siew Yin argued that Legha was aware the victim was intoxicated and that it was “reasonably foreseeable” the push would result in grievous harm. She also noted that Legha fled the scene without offering assistance to the victim. In his defense, the lawyer emphasized that no weapon was involved, and the push was described as “generic,” not specifically targeting vulnerable spots, according to Channel News Asia.

For the offense of voluntarily causing hurt that led to grievous harm, Legha faced a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to SGD 10,000, or both, the report further mentioned.
