Singapore, Oct 9 (PTI) – An Indian national employed in Singapore's construction sector has been sentenced to 13 months in prison after pleading guilty to two charges of voyeurism and one count of outrage of modesty towards an American woman.
Thirupathi Mohandas, aged 41, had an additional four charges, including two counts of housebreaking, considered during the sentencing process.
According to The Straits Times, Mohandas first noticed the woman while she was in a condominium unit. Attracted to her appearance, he broke into her apartment and molested her while she was asleep. Despite being discovered by the 35-year-old American woman, Mohandas managed to flee.
Shockingly, just two days later, he returned to the apartment, this time observing her while performing a sex act. This sinister conduct left the victim feeling "scared and disgusted," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Ernest Chua. The victim subsequently sought help from her condominium's security personnel, who notified the police.
On May 4, just before midnight, Mohandas was arrested by police officers who found him loitering outside the condominium unit. He confessed to wanting to see the woman again.
Prosecutor Chua recommended a jail term of 12 to 18 months, emphasizing the premeditated nature and severe invasion of privacy entailed in the case.
Defending Mohandas, lawyer Ang Boon Yaw remarked, "(My client) is deeply ashamed of his behavior and has cooperated fully with the authorities throughout the investigation." District Judge Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz, while delivering the sentence, noted that Mohandas’ actions reflected a "recalcitrant brazenness and audaciousness" as he sustained a campaign of harassment over three days.
