Peshawar, Aug 29 (PTI) At least two paramilitary personnel lost their lives and another was wounded when gunmen attacked a checkpoint along the Karakoram Highway in Gilgit Baltistan on Friday, according to local police.
The attack took place at a security checkpoint near Chilas along the Karakoram Highway in Diamer district.
The checkpoint had been established in December 2023, shortly after a passenger bus was ambushed in the same vicinity, resulting in nine deaths and 21 injuries.
Early Friday morning, unidentified assailants fired upon the check post from a nearby hilltop, wounding three personnel, stated Abdul Hameed, Senior Superintendent of Police of Diamer district.
Two individuals later succumbed to their injuries, while one sustained abdominal injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The attackers managed to flee the scene soon after the incident, police reported.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assault.
At the site, police recovered two grenades and 10 spent shells, and noted at least 17 bullet impacts on the checkpoint.
Additional police and elite force personnel have been deployed to enhance security and initiate a search operation.
This incident is the most recent in a string of attacks along the Karakoram Highway.
