Bangkok, Jul 30 (AP) An explosion at a fireworks workshop in central Thailand claimed the lives of at least nine people on Wednesday, according to local officials.

The incident occurred in Suphan Buri province, situated about 95 kilometers northwest of Bangkok, in the core of the country's central rice-growing area.

The cause of the blast remains undetermined.

The Samerkun Suphan Buri Rescue Foundation reported nine fatalities and noted that two individuals were transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the provincial government's public relations department mentioned one person was injured.

The exact number of missing individuals has not been confirmed.

According to Police Senior Sergeant Major Pinyo Chanmanee, the explosion took place in a building used for fireworks production.

It remains unclear whether the facility was licensed to operate.

Images and footage from the site reveal shattered wooden structures amidst green rice fields.

A similar incident in the same locality in January 2024 resulted in the death of approximately 20 people.

Last July 2023, a major explosion at a fireworks warehouse in southern Thailand resulted in at least 10 fatalities and injured over 100 individuals, officials reported.
