Peshawar, Jun 27 (PTI) – Tragedy struck in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province as at least eighteen family members lost their lives to flash floods in the Swat River, according to rescue officials.
Four bodies have been recovered, officials reported. The efforts to locate the remaining individuals are ongoing. "The rescue operation is being conducted at five different locations with the participation of 80 personnel from Rescue 1122," stated Rescue 1122 Director General Shah Fahad in a press release.
The family was reportedly part of a tourist group visiting the scenic region when they were caught in swiftly rising waters due to heavy downstream rains.
The Swat River is known for its perennial flow in the northern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, but recent weather conditions have resulted in hazardous conditions. A comprehensive search operation is in effect to recover those still missing, officials confirmed.
