Colombo, Sep 5 (PTI) At least 15 people have tragically lost their lives, and another 15 sustained injuries following a road accident in the Badulla District of Uva Province, located in southern Sri Lanka, according to the police on Friday.

A group comprising over 30 individuals was on a leisure excursion from the southern town of Tangalle when their bus plummeted down a precipice of over 1000 feet near Ella Town around 9 pm local time on Thursday.

The incident occurred after the bus collided with an oncoming jeep, subsequently hitting the road railing and veering off course.

The fatalities include nine women, all of whom were employees of the Tangalle Urban Council.

Rescue operations were conducted by the military, police, disaster management teams, and local residents, as reported by the Newsfirst web portal.

Officials have confirmed that the injured individuals have been admitted to the Badulla Teaching Hospital, with several reported to be in critical condition, according to Adaderana.
