Tokyo, Oct 3 (AP) — A significant Japanese beverage company reports it has suffered a cyberattack, disrupting its operations for the fifth consecutive day as of Friday. Japanese media indicate that the company's popular beer and other beverages are experiencing shortages in certain stores.

Asahi Group Holdings announced that its computer systems were compromised on Monday, causing disruptions in orders, shipments, and a customer call center within Japan. Overseas operations remain unaffected.

A company spokeswoman informed The Associated Press on Friday that the issue remains unresolved. Despite this, some emergency shipments were completed on Wednesday through manual data entry by employees.

The cause and motive of the cyberattack are still under investigation, according to the spokeswoman, who preferred to remain anonymous as is customary for Japanese businesses.

Reports from Japanese media suggest some convenience stores have not received their deliveries, leading to low stocks and sellouts in certain areas.

At a Tokyo 7-Eleven store visited by an AP reporter on Friday evening, Asahi beer was still available in abundance, though the store clerk expected stocks to diminish soon.

Asahi stated it's uncertain when their system will be fully operational again. The company has canceled events and postponed product launches. While some media reports in Japan speculate that the attack might be ransomware, Asahi has not commented on those claims.

Headquartered in Tokyo and founded in 1949, Asahi produces beer, including the renowned Super Dry rice lager, along with cider, juices, baby food, candy, and other food items. (AP) NPK NPK
