Vietnam, Aug 5 (PTI) — Kaspersky, the global leader in cybersecurity and digital privacy, announced on Tuesday that over 84,000 online gaming account user details were leaked in India in 2024.

The highest number of gaming account data leaks in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region was recorded in Thailand, while Singapore saw the fewest such incidents.

The APAC region has become the central hub for gaming globally, boasting more than half of the world's gamers. Major markets such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the Southeast Asian countries with rapidly growing economies significantly contribute to this preeminence.

According to Kaspersky, Thailand experienced the highest number of leaked cases, totaling 162,892. It was followed by the Philippines with 99,273 cases, Vietnam with 87,969, India with 84,262, Indonesia with 69,909, Malaysia with 37,718, South Korea with 37,097, China with 18,786, Sri Lanka with 10,877, and Singapore with 4,262 leaked cases.

The company also reported that 11 million gaming account credentials were compromised globally last year.

APAC's rapid digital adoption, widespread mobile device penetration, and a strong youth-driven demand have spurred significant growth in both casual and competitive gaming sectors.

With nearly 1.8 billion players and counting, the gaming ecosystem in APAC is not only the largest by volume but also one of the most influential in setting global gaming trends and behaviors.

"Therefore, it is not surprising that the region is quickly becoming a fertile ground for data-stealing cyber threats," commented the company.

Speaking at an event, Adrian Hia, Kaspersky's Managing Director for Asia Pacific, noted that virus threats have increased dramatically over the past two decades, rising from one new virus threat every hour to 467,000 new virus threats every day in 2024.

The company's unaudited global revenue reached USD 822 million in 2024, with Kaspersky registering an 11% growth in sales last year.
