World Elephant Day 2021: Identified by their massive body, long trunks and large ears, elephants are the epitome of iconic beauty on Earth. But sadly, the past few years have seen a decline in their population and an overwhelming increase in threats towards them.
According to the World Wild Fund, the African Elephant Habitat has declined by over 50 percent since 1979 and the Asian elephants are now around 15 percent of their original range. Poaching activities, habitat loss, human-elephant conflict and exploitation in captivity are some of the threats faced by elephants.
Observed on 12th August annually, the day aims at spreading awareness about the protection and conservation of elephants. World Elephant Day was founded in 2012 by Canadian Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction of Thailand. This has enabled the coming together of several organisations in support of this global issue.
The enforcement of measures and policies will go a long way in preventing illegal activities, trade of ivory and ill-treatment of captive elephants. After a point, even the captive elephants must be reintroduced into the natural world.
With elephants dying all across the world, there is a dire need to amplify efforts to protect elephants now more than ever.
