WORLD CHOCOLATE DAY 2022: From chocolate truffles to chocolate liqueur, chocolates are relished by people the world over. Celebrated on 7 July, chocolate day is the perfect occasion to share and enjoy some chocolatey delicacies.

But how well do you know this irresistible treat? Here are some interesting facts about this sweet delight that you may not be aware of!

THE ORIGIN

Chocolate was first used as a drink in Central America by the Aztecs. The drink was brewed from cocoa beans and was sometimes mixed with vanilla or chilli peppers. The cocoa beans were so deeply valued by them that they used them as money.

CHOCOLATE IS A FERMENTED FOOD

Yes, you heard it right. Beans are extracted from the cacao pod which is then fermented, dried and roasted into cocoa beans. The cocoa nibs are separated from the shells of the bean and ground into a liquid. This chocolate liquor is further used to produce cocoa solids and slabs.

CHOCOLATE HAS ITS MELTING POINT

The melting point of chocolate is between 86°F and 90°F and this is lower than the human body temperature. Now you know why it so easily melts in your hand.

CONTAINS ANTIOXIDANTS

The darker the chocolate, the more antioxidants. The presence of antioxidants helps prevent oxidative stress and the risk of developing diseases like heart ailments and Alzheimer's.

HELPS REDUCE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

According to a study published in the journal, Depression & Anxiety, consumption of chocolate, particularly dark chocolate can help reduce the odds of clinically relevant depressive symptoms.
