World Cancer Day is celebrated every year on February 4. It is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. The theme this year is 'I Am and I Will.'
#1 Electronic Devices
Cell phones emit radio frequency energy. Research suggests that they could increase the risk of cancer by reducing melatonin levels in the body.
#2 Alcohol
Alcohol increases your risk of various cancers, like cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, liver and breast. It's worse for alcohol consumers who are smokers.
#3 Scented candles
Though they seem perfectly harmless, scented candles burnt indoors can release a large number of volatile organic compounds known to be bladder carcinogens.
#4 Sitting too much
Sedentary behaviour such as sitting or lying down for long periods can drastically increase your risk of cancer, especially colon and endometrial cancer, say studies.
#5 High temperature cooking
When food is cooked at high temperatures, or cooked and grilled on an open flame, heterocyclic amines or HCAs are formed. These can cause tumours of the colon, liver, skin and even lungs, says NIH.
