'Going green' is not as simple as you may think. Interestingly, the word 'vegetarian' was coined way back in 1842 by the founders of the British Vegetarian Society. It comes from the Latin word vegetus, which means "whole, fresh, or lively". But over the years, new vegetarian trends and diets have taken over, and picking the right kind may be confusing. Here's a quick guide to learn the lingo.
Flexitarian: Flexitarian is a semi-vegetarian diet, one that is majorly plant-based with an occasional portion of meat. Latest research claims that it has a lower carbon footprint and can help curb climate change.
Locavore: A locavore is someone who is committed to eating food that is grown or produced in their local community.
Reducetarian: Reducetarians mindfully and gradually reduce their consumption of meat and other animal products in order to improve their health and protect the environment.
Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian: 'Ovo' is the Latin word for egg and 'Lacto' refers to milk. Ovo-lacto vegetarians don't eat meat or fish, but consume products produced by animals like dairy and eggs.
Raw Vegans: Raw vegans combines the concepts of veganism and raw foodism. They give up all animal products, any food that is processed, and also food that cooked at high temperatures.
There are many reasons people choose to be vegetarian. What's yours?
