A new molecular test that detects TB as well as resistance to the drug Rifampicin in just about 90 minutes, developed by Indian scientists, has been approved by the World Health Organisation. The WHO's Global TB Programme has included the TrueNat TB test in its communication document. The test, which is cheaper and faster, is a part of the National TB Elimination Programme in India. WHO's endorsement of the technology will enable developing countries to procure the test. The Indian government has set an ambitious target of eliminating TB by 2025, five years before the global target.
