Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist militant group which rules the Gaza Strip. Israel, the US, the UK and the EU call this group a terrorist organization.
Hamas was founded in 1987 by Sheikh Ahmed Yasin, and his aide Abdul Aziz al-Rantissi when the first conflict between Israel and Palestine took place.
Backed by religious donations, it is a part of a regional alliance that includes Syria, Iran and the Hezbollah group in Lebanon.
