Eight former Indian Navy personnel were handed a death penalty in Qatar, a verdict India appealed against and called ‘deeply shocking.’
Reports said the men were accused of spying and espionage. However, their charges were never made public.
Meetu Bhargava, the sister of one of the ex-officers, requested PM Modi to intervene and bring back the accused months before the sentencing.
Appealing with ‘folded hands,’ Bhargava wrote that it was ‘high time that they all are brought back to India immediately.’
Qatar reportedly accepted India’s appeal on November 24. Qatar will set a hearing after assessing the appeal, NDTV reported.
India’s MEA, which was granted consular access to the accused, requested people to refrain from ‘engaging in speculation.’
The ex-Navy personnel, who were arrested in August 2022, reportedly have a distinguished service record of up to 20 years.
