The old Parliament complex was inaugurated by Lord Irwin on January 18 in 1927
It was initially called the Council House and housed the Imperial Legislative Council
Old Parliament building was designed by Herbert Baker and Edwin Lutyens. They were also responsible for planning the new British capital of New Delhi
The circular building has 144 pillars, each 27 feet long. It covers an area of nearly six acres
2500 stonecutters and masons were employed just to shape the stones and marbles. The old Parliament building was made at a cost of Rs 83 lakhs
Free India’s Constituent Assembly held its first session on December 9, 1946. The constitution came into force on January 26, 1950
