On November 23, India's first woman Supreme Court judge and former Governor of Tamil Nadu passed away. She was 96 years old.
She was appointed as Supreme Court Judge on October 6, 1989 and on April 29, 1992, she retired from her position.
In 1950, she topped the Bar Council exam and began her career in the lower judiciary in Kerala.
She obtained her Bachelors in Law from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. Before this, she did BSc in chemistry from University College.
She was the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 1997-2001. She rejected mercy petitions filed by 4 condemned prisoners in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
As Governor, she gave a clean chit to the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. After this, then Minister for Law, Arun Jaitley asked her to resign.
