The Delhi liquor policy case has entangled multiple Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and MP Sanjay Singh.
The Nov. 2021 policy made a shift towards privatisation of liquor sales in Delhi, opening up the application for licenses for everyone.
The new policy aimed to increase the Delhi government’s revenue and mitigate the black marketing of alcohol.
The AAP government was accused of promoting liquor culture in the national capital. BJP said multiple new shops opened in residential areas.
A July 2022 report from the Delhi Secretariat said ‘undue benefits’ were given to liquor businesses. This multiplied the BJP’s attacks on AAP.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena roped in the CBI for a probe. The Enforcement Directorate also joined the investigation.
The liquor policy was revoked starting Sept. 1, re-opening the government-licensed alcohol shops. The old system continues to date.
