Who is Karpoori Thakur?

Former CM of Bihar and a socialist leader who was popularly called 'Jan Nayak' (leader of the people).

When was he in power?

Thakur served as Bihar CM twice, first from Dec 1970 to June 1971 and then from Dec 1977 to April 1979.

Early life

Thakur was born on Jan 24, 1924 in Pitaunjhia village in Samastipur district of Bihar.

Political life

Thakur came to politics with a victory in Bihar Legislative Assembly election in 1952 from Tajpur constituency. He represented the Socialist Party.

Hero of backward class

He became a hero after his successful fights for the rights of the workers and pushed for reservation for backward classes.

A messiah

In 1970, Thakur held a 28-day 'fast-unto-death' for the cause of labourers in Telco.

A teacher

Before he became CM, Thakur served as education minister of Bihar. Being a former teacher, he emphasised on Hindi language in schools.

Enforced prohibition

As Bihar CM, Thakur banned alcohol completely in the state.

Quota for backwards

As CM, he introduced 26% reservation for backward classes in govt jobs in Bihar.

Death

Thakur passed away on February 17, 1988.
