Water Mission: Billionaire Sridhar Vembu tweets as village gets piped water

Jal Jeevan Mission, the government's water outreach and conservation program is garnering some steam. 

Padma Shri awardee and India's 59th richest person Sridhar Vembu, who is also the CEO of software company Zoho, took to Twitter as he showcased the fact that his village getting government-provided piped water supply.

"Government-provided piped water supply has arrived in my native village in Thanjavur district. Every household in the village now has a water connection. Our democratic system is slow but eventually, it gets things done," he tweeted.

The Indian government's Rs 3.6 lakh crore program has a target to put piped water in all of the country's 192 million rural homes by 2024. It could be a difficult job as currently only 70 million Indian households have piped water, which is about 36% of the target.
