After tomato prices crashed in the state of Maharashtra collapsing to under Rs 5 per kilo farmers from Nashik and Aurangabad protested by dumping hoards of tomatoes on Thursday evening, at the wholesale market.

The irked farmers have been dumping the fruit for the past 2 days as the price in the wholesale market has halved over the last 3 weeks. This comes at a time when the Maharashtra farmers have reported an excellent harvest of the crop.

Almost 20% of the country's tomatoes come from Nashik, where the average wholesale tomato price has gone down by 65% in the last 3 weeks from Rs 13/kilo to Rs 4.5/kilo.
